Project Description

Attention worked together with M-PAYG on the design of their digital solution for access to energy in developing countries. The concept won in the category Daily Life in this year’s Danish Design Award.

Almost 50% of the global growth in electricity production in recent years has come from wind, sun, biomass and other renewable sources. The transition to green energy is well underway, and especially developing countries can benefit greatly from utilizing new opportunities in the rising renewable energy market. But how are these energy sources made more affordable and accessible? This is the challenge that M-PAYG decided to tap into.

M-PAYG is a pre-paid solar energy system that provides low income households in developing countries with access to solar energy via small-scale mobile money instalments of DKK 35 per month. The concept has so far been introduced several places in Tanzania.

It is a visionary design project that utilizes the sharing economy and addresses important issues like climate change and power outages. Overall, it makes a significant difference in the everyday lives for the people involved. A project Attention is proud to be a part of.
